"We have met the Enemy and He is Us"

April 22.
Today's celebrating our planet.
Earth Day.

The First Earth Day was held on April 22 in 1970, founded by the United States Senator Gaylord Nelson. It was held as an environmental teach-in, in 1970, to address the environmental challenges faced by the world. Since that day on, April 22 has been the Earth Day...a day to spread awareness and inspire appreciation of the Nature's beauty and Her sheer awesomeness!

Here's a video of the Planet Earth...forwarded to me by a friend. Watch it when you're feeling low and it'll perk you right up! (Er...one doesn't necessarily have to be living at the depths of depression to properly appreciate this...it's for everyone.)

Wonderful and awe-inspiring, don't you think?
The bewitching variety of colors...the rapturous sceneries...Absolutely breathtaking!
All those beautiful felines walking and stalking regally or the cheerful deers sprinting away into the woods. Is there anything that is as grand as this?
Nature has provided us with such majestic sights and handy resources, but what are we doing to pay Her back?

Earth today is in an almost sorry state!

We have pillaged and raped our planet. Yes. But we call it "Our Planet"? We have caused so much harm that it defies the words like atrocities!
We are the enemy to our planet!
Global Warming, dwindling resources, melting Ice-caps, species close to extinction are challenges we are facing today. Population explosion! One of the ecologists have been spotted quoting, To feed a starving child is to exacerbate the population explosion problem."  I know...it sounds hard-hearted and merciless, doesn't it? It makes one think if one should wish for more disasters to strike down on us so at least one of the problems could be dealt with.

What could be done to preserve the Planet??
Does it need to be 'rescued' by better things than Man, like in the movie- The Day the Earth Stood Still? Obliterating the human presence. That isn't logical, is it?

Hmm, let us consider the scenario when the world is without Man. Nature would then rebuild and revive herself, wouldn't she? It would take eons, of course. But she would, eventually.
'The World Without Us' by Alan Weisman is a book that outlines, how long man would last and when he's extinct, then would there be any trace that man once lived on the planet?

It would be interesting to note that the only evidence of Humankind ever having inhabited the planet would be the presence of radioactive waste and the plastics!
Quite grim, isn't it?

Well then, while we last, however long that might be, let us help preserve at least some part of the planet!
Recycle, Reuse, Reduce and Rescue!
Let us plant some plants and increase the greenery. Try to turn vegetarian too, while you are at it!
Go Green!

Here's one optimistic quote : "If the Planet could recover from the Permian-Triassic extinction event then it can recover from the Human".

  1. Thats a very beautiful post...specially the part where you deal with a world without us, humans. You see, we have made so many strides on the technology front....we have even successfully altered the composition of matter at the microscopic level. Yet, we have been unable to find a long lasting solution to the fundamental problem of waste disposal. It's not that we have run out of ideas or alternatives, it's just that we are not paying enough attention to this pressing matter. Another earthquake or so, and man will perhaps realize that these are not random events, but carefully planned warnings from mother nature before she decides that she is finally through with us. I hope we learn before it's too late. Such a unique and advanced species as us does not merit mass extinction, anyway....

  2. Hey! Thank you for the comment! :)
Right you are about humans not meriting from mass extinction.
The thing is...we are all almost indifferent about what's happening around us...watching everything with quiet faces! Only life-threatening situations would propel us to take action.
All the technology...it's only for making our life easier, wouldn't you agree?
What we breathe today...the air...it's the smell of prosperity. On our way to prosperity, we have done irreparable damage to the Nature.
The recent disaster in Japan! If that isn't taken as a warning, then I don't know what else might be.
I don't entirely like the idea of facing another such terrible warning. I hope the others don't either.
I'll do my bit to calm and appease Mother Nature. You do, too!
